Mr. Koji TSURUOKA, Former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the UK
"The Evolution of the International Situation: From the Formation of the Post-War Order to an Era of Diversity"
On June 24, starting at 3:00 PM, the 28th SAPA Symposium was held at Rengo Kaikan, featuring a lecture by Mr. Koji Tsuruoka, former Ambassador to the UK. Titled "The Evolution of the International Landscape," the presentation covered the establishment of the post-war international order, stabilizing factors during the Cold War, and the diversification of the international community resulting from the increase in UN member states. Mr. Tsuruoka noted that China's accession to the WTO has impacted the global economy and that differences in political systems have become a challenge for the international order. He also highlighted the growing complexity of the international community driven by rising ethnic consciousness and the increasing number of nations, emphasizing the importance of respecting diversity and fostering dialogue. Finally, addressing the issue of global wealth disparity as a source of conflict, he argued that developed nations bear a responsibility to combat corruption. During the Q&A session, discussions touched upon measures to address income inequality—such as digital taxation and taxes on the wealthy—and Mr. Tsuruoka concluded by citing the UK's successful initiative to train medical students from Malawi as an example of the significant role developed nations can play.
